BOOK REVIEW: Paris for One By Jojo Moyes ★★★★☆

I came across Quick Reads at my local library. And as I wanted something quick to read I gave it a shot. Quick Reads are a series of short books by bestselling authors and celebrities. Their aim is to encourage adults, who do not read often, or find reading tough, to discover the joy of books and that reading is for everyone, no matter what skill.

This year they have six new titles:
  • Roddy Doyle - Dead Man Talking
  • Jojo Moyes - Paris for Two One
  • Adèle Geras - Out of the Dark
  • Sophie Hannah - Pictures Or It Didn't Happen
  • Fanny Blake - Red for Revenge
  • James Bowen - Street Cat Bob
And I loaned out the first three from the list. I started with Paris for One.

Now, where do I start with this short chick lit, without popping in the spoilers? I haven’t read a short story in a while but Paris for One caught my eye. It is a charming and a heart-warming story about an English woman, Nell who is twenty-six and has never been to Paris, let alone on a weekend away with her handsome boyfriend Pete. Everyone knows she is just not the adventurous type. But when Pete doesn’t turn up for their romantic mini-break, Nell has the chance to prove everyone wrong. Sad and alone in Paris, Nell meets the mysterious moped-riding Fabien and his group of carefree friends.

It’s a perfectly predictable short chick lit story and I read this in 2 hours (which says a lot because it takes me a while to finish any story). Although the characters seemed two dimensional at times, the story pulled through and it left a smile on my face. I think it’s important to feel some reaction when you finish a book. Moyes described the romance and the Paris cityscapes in such a way, it made me want to go to Paris and see the brilliance of it all. I particularly liked the interaction between the French Hotel Assistant, Nell and the American Lady comical and light.

I would certainly recommend this quick read to anyone who likes this kind of book. It was fun, quick and left me feeling hopeful, that sometimes taking a chance, taking a risk can lead to some amazing adventure. Sometimes you’ve just got to believe in yourself.
