BOOK REVIEW: Pretty Lethal By Joe Schreiber ★★★☆☆
Now I know from personal experience that when it comes to book sequels the standards need to be higher than its previous book. Pretty Deadly is a fast paced, action packed story, perfect for a teenage boy’s wet dream. I wasn’t expecting much from its sequel Pretty Lethal (or the USA title Perry’s Killer Playlist). I mean what else needs to happen?
Oh, we still need to know what Perry is doing after the first book as clearly he didn’t want to go to college. He takes a European tour for his band Inchworm and lands himself a hot blonde “girlfriend” (yep air quotes which you’ll definitely understand after reading). But I think what the reader really wanted to know was where did Gobi Zaksaukas, that deadly female assassin, go?
To be honest I’m smack bang in the middle, on that fence of liking or disliking the book. As with this book, the chapter titles are named after famous rock songs like Green Day’s American Idiot and Rage Against the Machine’s Wake Up, fitted perfectly with each chapter. Plus I like Gobi – that cold calculating bitch of a femme fatal, even since the first book, but her stereotypical European with the broken accent did annoy me.
I did find this sequel to be a bit clichéd, like the plot and the hidden baddy after. From the start, Perry questions why someone like Paula would date him and I’m there screaming from the first page “dude the signs are everywhere”. I mean how thick could Perry get? I wanted to physically get in that book and smack him with an encyclopaedia.
So really to sum it all up, I’m glad that I read the sequel, even though I didn’t enjoy it as much as I would have liked but I personally won’t be reading it again. I would, however, recommend it to those who loved the first book and are eager to discover Gobi and Perry’s adventure.
